Counselors Team Update - Wednesday (Peri)

Hey everyone,

My name is OPIE, and I've been working with the 5- 6 age group.
Its been such a handful, but its definitely been fun. The kids are all amazing, yet so clingy and annoying at times, but I still work my way around that to hangout with them and that sorta thing.
I'm not gonna lie, its pretty overwhelming, but still pretty amazing.
Jive and me are working with the same group, and they're such cool kids.

I've actually really gotta go now,
but someone else from the counselors team should write soon.

love,
Opie ( peri)

Wide Game - Diamonnnd Smugglersss! (Peri and Zach)

Hallooooo :)

Yesterday we organized and played a camp wide game, which we call DIAMOND SMUGGLERS.
The kids loved it, as did we. The compassion team spent pretty much all day setting up, and the result was worth it. The campers said this was the best game they ever played at camp.

We gotta go to camp now,

LOTS OF LOVE,

Opie and Noodles. ( peri and zach )

Arts/Prep Team Update - Tuesday (Zach)

Hey everyone!

Today was Tuesday, and the second day serving at Kerr Street Day Camp. It was allot less hectic and confusing since we all knew what was going on this time. Since my team is in charge of the Arts, we planned a CRAZY craft for today.. PEOPLE PAINTING! :D

The kids split into two groups, one to paint Hurricane (Katrina), and one group to paint Rafiki (Marlé). They had so much fun doing it! Shuffle and I spent the entire time refilling cups of paint and encouraging the kids to paint their counselor's bodies, not their faces... haha

Marle and Katrina ended up covered in paint, because the suits they wore were apparently not intended to be actually painted...

Here are some pictures of them wearing the suits.

ANYWAY, We have been having a great time, but I have to go because we are all going to have dinner. :)

Arts/Prep Team Update - Monday

Hey everyone!

We just wanted to let you know that Monday went great, and that we are so exited to be finally putting everything we learned and set up during the past 6 months into action!

We started the week off with a pretty low-key craft, but still, allot of the kids loved it!

I will be posting some pictures soon, but basically, we had Foobin (Brit) draw a really big superhero outline in chalk (on the pavement), and we had the kids color it in, and give a name to the superhero. When they were done, we just let them go crazy with chalk all over the black top.. very little set-up, but TONS OF FUN!

peace.

The team settled into our new home for the next 5 days very well!!! The girls room is extremely hot. 9 girls, one bathroom and no air conditioning. The guys are enjoying the hard concrete and big screen TV!

We had a fantastic evening worship time on Sunday. We are nervous about putting all our prep and training into action but feel confident that we will do a great job. Can't wait to see the campers tomorrow.

GREAT JOB TEAM!!!

THANK you gys for two awesome prep meetings. We got tons done on Wednesday and Saturday!!! Jack Astor's was a blast and seeing you each get all your programs for the week prepped was amazing. A special thanks to Zach for putting together our program binder with all our activities and instructions in it.

Everything we bought on our shopping spree is in the shopping cart and waiting to be used in our awesome program for the kids.

MAKE SURE YOU LOOK OVER THE FINAL DETAILS letter that was emailed and handed out today. It is vital that you read it carefully and that your parents also look through it so they know what is going on. If you didn't get the letter emailed to you please call or email me ASAP!

You guys rock!!! See you next week!

calling all 2008 jr high compassion team members...

your 2nd to last training/prep day will be held on wednesday, july 9 from 10am-2pm.

come ready to...well...get ready!

theunderground goes to kerr street

what do you get when you throw together 16 jr highers, 3 small group leaders, and 1 crazy jr high youth pastor? an AMAZING week of compassion, camp, and fun!

on sunday, july 20, students from theUNDERGROUND jr high will embark on an incredible week-long summer adventure.

they've trained. maybe some of them have already packed...(it may be a little early still). they've fundraised. they've prepared themselves. and soon, they will go.

but, you may be thinking: where are they going? what will they be doing? why are they so awesome?

and so, i'll start at the beginning, by explaining what kerr street ministries is (taken from their website at www.kerrstreetministries.com) :

Ten years ago, a desperate disabled single mother asked, "What is the church going to do for the poor?"

In response, more than 40 area churches, local service clubs, community service providers, schools and supporters came together. Combined, they provided a place where people's immediate needs could be met. Programs were developed that reached down to the root causes of problems.

Founded with a day camp of 15 campers and a non-profit grocery store, Kerr Street Ministries now serves over 1800 people. The ministry's focus is on forming positive and relevant relationships with the many adults, youth and children who come through the door. We provide tangible relief and hope for a better future.

In an area where a youth gang once operated, there is now a youth drop-in centre, a summer day camp, a food bank and a multitude of services to provide holistic support for families and individuals.

and so, our jr highers are going to help out with the summer day camp at kerr street. this year, there are over 150 campers registered for camp! 95% of the campers at Kerr Street attend for free, and are aided by fundraisers and Kerr Street supporters. Kerr Street strives to ensure that no camper is turned away for financial reasons.

our jr highers will be an incredible help to ensure that this week of camp is an awesome experience for these kids. as each of our students are giving up a week of their summer to serve at camp, please keep them in your prayers and encourage them when you can.

this is gonna be an amazing adventure with some amazing people.
